Keep It Real Thursdays – Cinnamon Citrus Spiced Braised Lamb Shanks

I love me some lamb. Don’t hate me but I love all nursery rhyme animals really. Lamb, duck, chickens, goats and pigs. I should probably hide this fact from you since I’m sure some of you are loathing me for my shameful admission,  but its just me, no point in hiding it, lying, and there’s no use denying it.

I love me some lamb.

So much so, that I usually save it for a special occasion. The other night was the last night my best friend of 28 years was going to be in town and I wanted to make something special. Something we could prepare together, and eat and laugh together at the table. It was all of those things.

Lamb, White Bean and Feta Meatballs with a Greek Style Salad


Some of you must be wondering why it is that I am on a lamb kick lately. The truth is I had a little nasty incident with some ground turkey a few weeks back, involving me, a bathroom and events that I won’t get into. Food poisoning is one of the most horrible things to have to go through. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. This event has sadly left me steering clear of one of our household staples. The truth is this recipe could easily be made with ground turkey but as you now know, I have a hard time even picking up a package without gagging let alone handling it with my bare hands. So this recipe was originally intended for a lower fat ground meat, however ground lamb was the only one I could bring myself to buy. That might be because it didn’t come in a clear package so I couldn’t see it. Yes, I do love lamb so I only had to think twice about using it. And considering the circumstances, that’s not long at all.

Greek Style Braised Lamb Shoulder Chops and an Entire Bottle of Wine

I have never made Lamb Shoulder Chops so this was a new experience for me. Why lamb shoulder? Well, to be honest, a package of 2 was only 3 bucks and I couldn’t resist the deal. Like all cheap cuts of meat, I knew there had to be a way of cooking them to make them shine. Now there are two camps for cooking lamb shoulder chops. The first is the grilling camp. Since we ran out of propane to the BBQ (grill), that option was out. It was raining and cold so braising just seemed like the smartest solution anyway. Besides, I love braised meat. Most of the recipes for braising lamb shoulder included wine or beer, which is fine by me! This one happen to use an entire bottle of wine. How decadent and brilliant. I was in!

Braised Lamb Shanks with French Lentils and Kale

This recipe was a last minute inspired meal. While at Edible Island, Courtenay’s local organic store, I decided to swing by the coolers to see what kind of treats they had brought in. I had just run in for a quick lentil run, but once they get me into the store, I have a hard time leaving without spending 30 dollars. The great part of this trip was the organic lamb shanks they were selling for 3 bucks! I love happy lamb shanks and when they are in that price range, they are irresistible. They also received a bunch of fresh winter kale that was gorgeous. So there it was, dinner in the bag. Kale, lentils and lamb. I was sure I had a recipe that I could tweak to make this combination work. It turned out great and it will certainly be a standby when the shanks are on sale again. I hope you enjoy the twist of kale with your lamb. I couldn’t resist sneaking in a power house of nutrition like kale and lentils.

How To Braise Lamb Shanks

Those of you that know me, know that I LOVE Lamb Shanks. There are so many better cuts of meat available but this one is my favorite. When my husband and I were married I knew exactly what I wanted to serve. Lamb shanks of course! As I was discussing my choices with the venue, you could hear an audible snobbery about the peasant meat I had chosen to serve for dinner. Maybe the rack of lamb would be more enjoyable for the guests? No actually, I’m only planning on getting married once and I want duck and lamb shanks. So they obliged (a little reluctantly) and I am so happy they did.  If lamb shanks are braised properly the meat falls off the bone, is tender and the flavor is amazing. The video below is a pretty close approximation of what we had for the reception(the meat part that is). I have never tried to duplicate this recipe myself but this video shows everyone exactly what to do and he does it in under 2 and a half minutes. He’s made it so easy to duplicate, how could anyone resist…vegetarians aside that is. This will be on my weekend “to do” list. Besides his accent is adorable!
