We’re all busy people with busy lives. One of the things that most people struggle with is having great tasting, “good-for-you” food that they can take with them on the go. Eating real for breakfast and dinner is pretty straight-forward, but it’s the in-between meals that we sometimes get stuck on. Homemade Almond Power Bars For Non-Lazy People

Here we are again. Another ski fest for my hubby means some super calorie dense healthy snacks to keep him going in the great outdoors. We are also down to 2 protein brownies, so it’s definitely time! He doesn’t like to take the brownies because he says they don’t hold up well to being tossed around the bottom of a backpack under snow shovels, probes and other backcountry ski essentials.

Imagine that, a brownie not holding up its shape after having a shovel and 10 lbs of junk thrown on top of it. Jeez, what was I thinking? :) Note that they hold up just fine in my work bag, under 2 pairs of shoes, mittens and pens, and a bunch of other random stuff I lug around with me in an eco friendly shopping bag. I figure if it can hold up to a day of being tossed around in that environment they pass the test…but that’s just me. What do you think?

Coffee Cinnamon Protein Brownies

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Ours was so much fun! We’ve been back a couple of hours and I just had to write to tell you all about it.

The first uber fun thing we got to do was a cooking demo at Beyond The Kitchen Door on Saturday. We had a great turn out and thank you to everyone who showed up! For those of you who were requesting the recipe we featured, here’s the link.

We absolutely love doing the demos, but especially during this time of the year. The store is full of Christmas cheer and people looking for fun gifts for loved ones. What better place to shop than a kitchen store, right? So much fun. We had the opportunity to meet with so many great people, which is the real reason we do it. I love getting to meet new people from our community and it’s even better when we’re brought together because of good, healthy, real food.

Chocolate Chip Walnut Protein Cookies (no protein powder, gluten free, dairy free)

So my mission is to find or create a protein cookie recipe that 1. doesn’t suck and 2. doesn’t use that horrible processed protein powder.

One of my biggest pet peeves about diet websites is that they often promote protein powder supplements or prepackaged protein snacks and a multitude of low fat junk that is filled with all kinds of non-real food ingredients and sugars/fake sugars to make them edible (and that part is debatable). How anything so heavily processed and full of sugar going to make anyone skinny is beyond me. In all fairness, I used to be one of those people, but I guess that’s where the education part starts.

“Naughty But So Nice” Double Chocolate Cherry Protein Balls

I was motivated to make this recipe for 2 reasons. Reason one : My husband and I just started the Insanity workout. It’s a DVD workout that we can do from home together, so there’s no excuses. First off, it’s tough, really tough. You know you’re in for a world of hurt when the participants on camera (the fitness actors per say) can’t complete it and they are lying on the floor dying in between sets. About 30 minutes after the workout, I’m pretty shaky, very hungry and a little nauseous. So I needed to have something I could grab quickly as I’m walking out the door with the dog before I come back and have my breakfast. Reason two: I am a little PMS-y, as my husband can attest, and I’m going through some major chocolate cravings.

Just to relieve my guilt of using a cup of white chocolate chips in a recipe titled Protein Balls, I did do a calorie count. Not bad, 130 a piece. I can handle that.

So here are a list of things I tell myself to relieve any guilt that may be remaining.
