Deliciously Holistic – A Book Review and Lemon Dill Goat Cheese

Lemon Dill Yogurt Goat Cheese

I have had the pleasure of receiving Deliciously Holistic* by Shelley Alexander, this past week. Thank you Shelley for sending me your lovely book to review.** I have spent the last week flipping through it daily, reading not only the recipes, but the wealth of knowledge that it contains. What’s different about this book is that it is a resource, not just a bunch of great recipes (which it also has, more than a 150 in fact).

Maybe I should start by telling you a little bit about Shelley. She is the owner of one of my favorite blogs and companies, A Harmony Healing. She received her chef’s training at The Los Angeles Culinary Institute and is a certified healing foods specialist and holistic chef. So it’s not surprising that every recipes leads in with information about each recipe.

Tasty Flax Seed and Almond Cracker Recipe: Full of Omega 3s and Low Carb

Flax Seed and Almond Crackers
I wanted to make a cracker recipe for my friends upcoming visit. The thing about being out in the bush is that you really look forward to people coming to visit. I have been hard at work creating recipes. She no longer eats gluten (for blood sugar reasons) and eats grains in very small amounts. It’s kind of a blend of the Wheat Belly Diet and Eat Right 4 Your Type (affiliate). I wanted to keep that in mind while meal planning for her stay. I picked out some fun cocktail recipes including one made with cilantro lime vodka, and a sparkling wine cocktail made with dark cherry syrup (homemade and low sugar of course). Fun!

I also developed these 3 Ingredient Savory Pancakes. One thing she has been recommended to eat a lot of is cheese and dairy. I thought the yogurt topping would be a nice way of sneaking in some healthy probiotics using Greek yogurt. However, with the cheese (as far as I’m concerned) we’ll need crackers!

Peanut Butter Bars and Creep In On My Costco Cart

So where should I start? Delicious Peanut Butter Bars or my Costco shopping cart/ confession?

Let’s start with my Costco shopping cart and my embarrassing confession. I like getting the bad stuff out of the way first.

Deep breath…

I, France Jeanne D’Arc Morissette, creep on other peoples grocery carts.

I know, I know! So bad but it’s true.

why am I telling you this?

It’s true. I do the grocery cart creep.

9 Incredible Fruit Smoothies To Jump Start Your Day

Smoothies are a big part of my day since moving out to the bush. Without access to farm fresh eggs, I have decided that smoothies are my go to breakfast these days. Sure there are alternatives, like toast, granola, fruit crumbles even, but those all require time in advance. Not that I don’t bake bread, but I definitely don’t want to eat it everyday, same with granola. The only exception is that I do think I could probably eat fruit crumble (the whole food version) everyday, but I don’t find them very filling. Besides it’s a little harder to sneak veggies into a crumble than into a smoothie.

So, I decided to go on a search for delicious smoothies.

AND I wanted a variety.

Today I might have blueberries, but tomorrow I may not. I may have used up all my spinach and need other vegetable options. Essentially I just need options for a variety of veggies and fruit, since my grocery deliveries are only every 3 weeks. A girl runs out of stuff. Usually the good stuff first…like cherries and spinach.

Winter Wonderland At The Tower and Starting Out With Vegan Cashew Cheese

I’ve arrived. Day three of being at the tower. Good thing they brought in a snow plow to clear the paths to the outhouse, storage sheds and cabin. It would have been days of shoveling. Day 1 of the fire season and I’m starting with a base of 36 cm of snow!

And guess what?

It’s still snowing. I’ve been in a snow cloud now for a solid 24 hours and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. That’s not a bad thing necessarily. It’s giving me lots of time to “settle” in. Unpack boxes and suitcases. It also provides me lots of time to try and find things like where do they keep batteries, the broom and the mop? This place has been shut up since last October so there’s a bit of cleaning to do. And I have nothing but time.
