“Keep It Real” Thursday

Here’s a big offender in food additives to avoid. Is this in your cupboards? You’re not alone. Find out more below.

We revamped some of our scheduled posts and as a result we’ve moved our Whole Food Wednesdays to Thursdays. It’s now called Keep It Real Thursday. I hope the change does not put a bump in anyone’s stride.

Welcome to Keep It Real Thursdays! You’re invited to come and share your real food recipes using the Linky below. We’re excited to see what yummy things you’ve been creating and what great informational posts and videos you’ve got for us!

This week, I wanted to do something a little different. Since I have been on holidays for the last 10 days, I’m going to start our first Keep It Real Thursday by highlighting one of my favorite posts from the large number that were shared last week. With so many great bloggers and helpful information coming every week its hard to choose, but this one spoke to me and I wanted to share it with all of you.

For me the information supporting positive choices is one of the key reasons I stay on the Whole Food Band Wagon. I hope it will help you as well.

A few months ago I joined the email list for the website Hungry for Change. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend taking the time to watch this hour long documentary. It will change the way you think about nutrition. Now, every month or so I receive interesting updates and nutritional information that I find helpful to keeping me on track. A recent email I received talked about the top 10 additives to avoid. The information is fascinating and I had hoped to do a post on it soon.

Kim at The Soulicious Life did an excellent job recapping the newsletter and shared it with the community last week for Whole Food Wednesdays.  As a mother, wife, friend, sister and a little worker bee, she shares her passion for nourishing her body and her Soul. I hope you’ll give her a visit and check out this super handy dandy list of additives/preservatives you should be on the lookout for next time you go shopping.

I plan to write them down and keep them in my wallet like I do for the Dirty Dozen. I find having the list handy when I have to buy something that has an ingredient list greater than one. I don’t know about you but if it’s not written down there’s no way I’ll remember it all. I used to have a great memory, but after I turned 30, it’s like I turned dumb. Lists aren’t so bad though. At the very least they keep me focused on what I need, making shopping WAY more efficient. That’s not a bad thing at all.

If you’re new to whole foods and the list seems like way to much to tackle at once, don’t be overwhelmed and cut yourself a break. Start with one of the ten additives, committing to no longer eating or buying foods with that additive for the next month, before adding another additive to the list. Before the end of a year you’ll have made a drastic change in the foods you eat and you’ll have done it one baby step at a time.

Top Ten Additives to Avoid

How many North Americans are eating this right now?

Keep It Real Thursday

Welcome to Keep It Real Thursday!

The Rules:

1. Introduce yourself, your blog, and what you’re about in the comment section and a small blurb about what you’re sharing. This way people can get to know you a little bit right off the hop and hopefully follow you as well.

2. Be sure to add a link in your post back to this post. Simple linky etiquette. This allows your readers to find other posts that may help them on their journey.

3. If you’re sharing recipes, the only requirement is that the ingredient list be comprised of real food only, that means non-processed food items. That being said, we are all in different places on our real food journey, some more advanced than others. I invite all of you to share, no matter where you are on your journey, but I ask you to stay mindful when sharing your recipes that this is a whole (real) food blog. This means, no ingredient lists that include edible oil products (velveeta, frozen whip topping), protein powders, ketchup, white flour, margarine or white and brown sugar.

4. Less of a rule but more a suggestion: Retweet,  Stumble, or Pin this post so EVERYONE gets more exposure and traffic. It’s win-win for everyone.

Don’t have a blog? That’s ok, we’d still love to hear from you. Write your recipes or tips in the comment section so we can get to know you too!

Now it’s your turn to share your whole food recipes and ideas!

I’m sharing this with Monday Mania, Slightly Indulgent Tuesday, Tasty Tuesday, Fat Tuesday,Whole Foods Wednesday, Cast Party Wednesday, Allergy Free Wednesday, The Tasty Alternative, What’s Cooking Wednesday, Real Food Wednesday, Simple Lives Thursday, Full Plate Thursday, Freaky Friday, Fight Back Friday, and Foodie Friday.

Hey guys! I love your new linky concept- such a great idea!
I am sharing a recipe for homemade toothpaste. I have experimented with a few different types over the past few years and this one is my absolute favorite!
I started making my own toothpaste to eliminate the fluoride and other chemicals that we were consuming. I thought, “if we are eliminating chemicals from our diet, why are we still putting it in our mouth with our toothpaste?!” It just didn’t make sense.
So, this toothpaste recipe has no fluoride, no artificial sweeteners, no preservatives and it tastes good and gets your teeth clean!

Thanks Linnae. We just spent 10 buck on a natural toothpaste. I won’t be doing that on a regular basis. I look forward to trying out you recipe.

  2. Amanda July 12, 2012 at 12:11 pm #

Hi everyone! I’m a bit new here, and love all the real food posts – and everyone’s links! What a wonderful way to find new information and recipes! I’m sharing a recipe I concocted this week for a small get together. Grain Free, Refined Sugar Free Lemon Meringue Bars – they were a hit even with the “non-real food” fans among us!

    • France Morissette July 12, 2012 at 4:31 pm #

Lemon meringue bars sound sick! Can’t wait to try them. Lemon flavored desserts are my absolute favorite. Than you for sharing Amanda. It’s great to have recipes that even non real foodies enjoy. It’s so much easier to convert them that way 😉

  3. Michelle @ The Willing Cook July 12, 2012 at 1:12 pm #

I like the new name and move to Thursday!  Thanks for the email concerning the update.  I’m sharing a very easy, no-oven Beans & Rice dish today.  It’s healthy, versatile, easy, and inexpensive to serve, not to mention a crowd-pleaser.  Thanks for hosting!

    • France Morissette July 12, 2012 at 4:30 pm #

What a great crowd pleaser. Who doesn’t like rice and beans? Only crazy people.

  4. Heather @Gluten-Free Cat July 12, 2012 at 1:30 pm #

Love the new day!  I’m linking up my Orange Sweet Potato Smoothie today.  At some point I’m going to have to break down and turn the oven on.  But smoothies, raw dishes, and salads are perfect for this hot, hot summer!  I’m off to investigate Hungry for Change.  Thanks so much for telling us about it!

  5. Carrie Raab July 12, 2012 at 2:04 pm #

Thank you for hosting! i hope to remember the new day. Reminders are always welcomed! I have shared a summer berry salad and a homemade sunscreen recipe. More and more people are realizing what we put on our bodies are just as bad as what we put in. (food we eat). Hope you enjoy them! Carrie @ younglivingoillady.com

    • France Morissette July 12, 2012 at 4:29 pm #

HI Carrie, I’ve added you to the reminder email. I’m seeing more and more homemade sunscreen recipes. I’m excited to check yours out.

  6. Annemarie July 12, 2012 at 3:30 pm #

I’m glad you moved to Thursdays!  I posted a recipe for raspberry jam bars.  These bars remind me of the Entenmann’s Raspberry Danish Twist that I used to enjoy way too often before I switched to real food!

    • France Morissette July 12, 2012 at 4:25 pm #

That’s great. Isn’t it awesome when we find whole foods to replace the junk we used to eat. I know I do!

  7. Kristy Gardner July 12, 2012 at 3:59 pm #

Yup! Thursday is a much better day!

Good morning fellow linker uppers! (that makes us sound like some weird brand of illegal drug, haha)…

This week I’ve linked up something from my sister blog, Taste Buds, after I was inspired by my June Foodie Pen Pal Package: Cactus Jelly Bourbon’d Bacon Tacos… Because if bourbon doesn’t make everything better, bacon certainly does. Mmmm bacon…. Mmmm bourbon…. Mmmmm bourbony Bacon…

    Happy linking!

    • France Morissette July 12, 2012 at 4:25 pm #

That’s hilarious. Bourbon does certainly make everything better and so does bacon. I used to work with a chef that used to say”when in doubt, add bacon” The only exception to that rule was maybe add duck fat. lol

  8. Debbie @ Easy Natural Food July 12, 2012 at 5:17 pm #

Love the new format! Thursday is a better day – Wednesday was getting too crowded. I’m sharing my Asparagus and Bacon Pasta Salad w/ Creamy Basil Pesto Dressing and my latest vegetable ferment – Savoy Cabbage, Carrot and Ginger. Thanks for hosting!

  9. Mindy @ Too Many Jars July 13, 2012 at 12:52 am #

Thanks for hosting!  This week I’m sharing a tour of my tiny herb garden on the balcony of my condo.  I also explore some great articles all on the topic of which fats to consume.  And I’m sharing my 5 tips for equipping your real food kitchen on a budget.  You can see how I have collected all sorts of goodies at a discount!

  11. Joanne July 13, 2012 at 12:36 pm #

I’m going to carry that list around also…I don’t want any of those additives in my life!

    • beyondthepeel July 13, 2012 at 4:15 pm #

      Just say “NO” to additives!

  12. Jenn Erickson July 13, 2012 at 11:18 pm #

I just found you today!  Thanks for the link up!  I love that people are getting the word out about real food, and the dangers of processed foods.
